Cosmic jingles: listen to Euclid’s image of M78

Video • December 18th, 2024

Visual Description: Opening Frame: The video begins with a still of M78—a reflection nebula set in a black void of space dotted with countless faint stars and distant galaxies. Nebula Details: M78 appears as softly glowing clouds, primarily in serene shades of pale blue, with warm amber tones weaving through darker dust silhouettes—creating an effect akin to swirling paint brushed across the canvas of space. Star Field: Behind and around the nebula, myriad stars glitter like scattered paint drops, their brightness varying to suggest depth: faint pinpoints for stars far away, a few slightly brighter ones closer to the viewer. Sonification Overlay: As the video plays, subtle visual cues—perhaps dots or highlights—move across the image in synchronization with musical tones. These represent the translation of light intensity and spatial position into sound. Musical Animation: The tones range from soft chimes to clear, bright notes, each pitch corresponding to the luminosity of stars or structure within the nebula. The visual effect is rhythmic and dynamic, giving the image a melodic pulse. Dynamic Flow: The scene may pan slightly or zoom in over the nebula as the sonification unfolds, drawing attention to different regions while the music evolves, reinforcing the connection between visual brightness and auditory tone. Credits Frame: The video concludes with a static end-screen: the image remains on display as text credits appear, acknowledging ESA, the Euclid Consortium, NASA, image processors (J.-C. Cuillandre and G. Anselmi), and the sonification by K. Nielsen.

Have you ever wondered what star nurseries sound like? Now you can find out. The exquisite image of a star-forming region, M78, taken by the Euclid mission, has been converted to a cosmic jingle.

M78 contains various star nurseries, which you can now explore by sound. To know what the sound and sight mean, go to https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Euclid.
